Ride stats work by detecting data sent from your light and matching that with location data from your mobile device. We then do some calculations to determine the amount of time cycled and distance traveled.

There are 3 main reasons why your ride stats may not match the distance rode:

  • Battery Saver (Android) & Lower Power (Apple) mode enabled
  • Trouble getting precise GPS location
  • Bluetooth connection issues between the phone and the light

Battery Saver & Low Power Settings

ANDROID:

On many Android phones, there are Battery saver or Power Saving modes. These modes attempt to save battery life by reducing the amount of background work being done by apps on your phone. Unfortunately these settings can interfere with the See.Sense app and the background work the app needs to do in order to collect your ride stats.

  1. Disable any battery saver settings including Power Saving Mode, Battery Management, Optimization or any third-party apps. This is a more common issue on Android phones running Android 6 or higher. For more information on specific devices running Android 6 or higher see below:
    1. HTC: Settings > Power > Battery optimization > Not optimized > All apps > See.Sense > Don't optimize > Done.
    2. Huawei:
      1. Turn Energy Settings to Normal and add See.Sense to “Protected Apps.”
      2. Settings > Apps > Advanced > Ignore optimizations > Allowed > All apps > See.Sense > Allow.
    3. LG: Settings > Battery & power saving > Battery usage > Ignore optimizations > turn ON for See.Sense.
    4. Motorola: Settings > Battery > select the menu in the upper right-hand corner > Battery optimization > Not optimized > All Apps > See.Sense > Don't Optimize.
    5. OnePlus (using OxygenOS Settings): Settings > Battery > Battery optimization > select menu at the top > switch to All apps list > See.Sense > Don't optimize.
    6. Samsung: Settings > Apps > select the menu in the upper right-hand corner > Special access > Optimize battery usage > All apps > Toggle OFF for See.Sense.
    7. Sony: Settings > ****Battery > select the menu in the upper right-hand corner > Battery optimization > Apps > See.Sense.
    8. Xiaomi (MIUI OS):**
      1. Settings > Additional Settings > Battery & performance > Manage apps battery usage > apps > See.Sense.
      2. Settings > Additional Settings > Privacy > Location > ensure you are using High Accuracy for Location Mode and allowing location access.

APPLE:

On iPhone's, there is a setting called Low Power mode. When activated your phone will temporarily disable features and reduce the amount of time apps are allowed to run in the background. Unfortunately, this setting can interfere with the See.Sense app and the background work the app needs to do in order to collect your ride stats.

You can find Low Power mode either by going to:

  • Control Centre (Swipe up from the bottom of the screen)
  • Settings > Battery > Low Power mode

Ensure that this mode is switched OFF.

When your iPhone reaches 20% battery, a "Low Power mode" prompt will also ask you to turn it on. Click "Cancel" to leave it disabled.

GPS Location Issues

GPS is a system to estimate location on Earth by using signals from a set of orbiting satellites. The GPS system includes the chip in your mobile device as well as the satellites above the Earth.

Occasionally your ride stats may report a different distance than you actually traveled and, unfortunately, it will not be possible for us to "fill in" the missing data or modify the existing data.

Please refer to the potential causes listed below if you are finding your stats do not match the distance rode:

  • GPS drift: The GPS point deviates from the road. This can cause your ride stats to report more distance than you actually traveled since the accumulated distance of GPS drift can lead to more distance being added than actually ridden.
  • Lost GPS signal: ****If the GPS signal is lost and sometime later re-acquired the pre- and post-signal-loss points will be treated just like any other two points and connected with a straight line. This may result in the ride stats reporting less distance than you rode. So instead of an accurate weaving line, it maps a straight line, resulting in a loss of data.
  • GPS bounce: 'Jumpy' GPS points can cause your ride stats to report more distance than you actually traveled since each 'zig' and 'zag' of the GPS points has to be accounted for with a straight line connecting them.

How to get a reliable GPS lock

To achieve a faster and more reliable GPS lock, you should provide:

  • A clear view of the sky. Any obstructions between the phone and the sky can adversely affect signal strength. A big tree is an obvious obstacle, but even a pocket or a backpack can cause problems for very low-strength signals.
  • Time to tune in to the signals from the satellites. To improve signal acquisition time, keep the device in one place and make sure the device's data communications are enabled. Even with a perfectly clear sky, it can take a few minutes before a lock can be established in some situations.

Steps to Take when Investigating GPS Issues on Mobile Devices

  1. Turn the phone off/on.
  2. Turn Location off/on OR turn Airplane mode on/off.
  3. Be sure See.Sense is allowed to use your location. ****
    1. Android: Settings > Apps > See.Sense > Permissions > Toggle Location ON. Be sure that you've allowed See.Sense to use Location in the background.
    2. iOS: Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Toggle Location Services ON. Be sure that you've allowed See.Sense to use Location Always. Your phone will remind you about this permission setting around a week after turning it on, please leave it enabled when reminded.
  4. Check that your location settings are set to High accuracy.
    1. Android: Settings > Connections > Location > Locating method > High accuracy.
    2. iOS: Settings > Privacy > Location Services > See.Sense > Toggle Precise Location ON

Bluetooth Connection Issues

To reduce the chances of the app disconnecting from your light and potentially affecting the collection of ride stats, you should:

  • Ensure the light is connected to the app before riding. It may sound simple but checking the light is connected before starting your ride and turning the light on when the app is connected will ensure we start the stat tracking process. Check out this video for a step-by-step guide.
  • Remove any obstructions from the direct line of sight between your phone and the light as much as possible. Obstructions between the phone and the light can adversely affect signal strength between them. This may mean moving your phone to a different location when riding to ensure the best possible signal strength, eg back pocket above the rear light.
